The island was acquired by Thomas Holladay in 1730. Virtually unchanged for over 400 years, the island is part of the Albemarle Regional Canoe/Kayak Paddling Trail and the Roanoke River State Trail . It is home to five (5) camping platforms for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts.
