“Leave no trace, bring a headlamp, and come back often.”
Outdoors enthusiast, Victor McManus found nature’s perfect escape paddling at Devil’s Gut on the Roanoke River State Trail. Spring is his favorite season to explore this tucked-away stretch, where wooden camping platforms like the Barred Owl Roost offer peaceful overnight stays deep in the swampy wilderness. With basic paddling and camping skills, a good map, and plenty of water, Victor says it’s easy to cruise, unplug, and enjoy nature bliss. From taking in the sounds of birdsong, stargazing on the platform, to grabbing ice cream at a pit stop like High Cotton Farms afterward, his advice is simple: “Leave no trace, bring a headlamp, and come back often.”
