A Bit about Bears
Camping Safely in Black Bear Country
Black
bears are the Roanoke's largest wildlife species. In fact,
some of the state's largest black bear have been documented in the
lower Roanoke in or near Washington County. This is just one of the
many natural features of the Roanoke Region. While bears and platform
campers have had no "unpleasant" meetings, campers should be
completely prepared for a bear encounter.
ALL food MUST be stored away from tents and/or sleeping areas in
AIR-TIGHT containers.
Other essential tips can be found at these links and, to insure
safety, ALL campers are required
to heed the advice given for camper safety in bear territory.

Roanoke River Partners (RRP) includes bear safety advice from
several sources as a convenience to campers. RRP does not guarantee
safety.
